Bed Bugs (Cimex lectularis)

Bed Bugs feed only on the blood of birds and mammals, including humans. These pests have been found to be infected and carriers of human pathogens, but have never been proven to biologically transmit even one pathogen to another human.

For almost forty years in the U.S., bed bugs existed only in children's nursery rhymes and certainly have not been a major issue for North Texas residents. However, in recent years there has been resurgence of this despicable pest. Most local infestations can be traced to the bedbugs hitchhiking in luggage that has been used in travels to hotels or other distant sites. Some of the finest hotels in major cities have had to deal with these pests...there is very little social or economic discrimination.

Bed bugs are nocturnal - hiding near their hosts. Some common harborage areas include bed frames, mattress seams, and even behind pictures on the wall. One of the signs of an infestation is the presence of crimson splotches on the bed sheets. These are the "leftovers" of a previous feeding from the host that slept in the bed.

Treatment

A through and detailed initial inspection is mandatory. A skilled and knowledgably inspector is very helpful. The small size of the juvenile insects can make it difficult to identify areas of infestation unless the appropriate inspection practices are followed. A large portion of the bed bug population may be found off the bed and in hidden voids of the surrounding structure.

After positive identification, all harborage areas should be treated with an appropriate insecticide. This step may require the disassembling of furniture in order to gain access to the common hidden voids that could be infested. It is recommended that follow-up inspections and treatment be scheduled to assure complete control and to prevent any secondary infestations.
