What is one thing you like about your home? Does it have open interior areas and lots of kitchen counter space? Does it have large showers or a big bathtub? Maybe what you love most about your home is that it belongs to you. Whatever you value about your home and property, we know one thing that will make you value it more. Pest control. Here are some things you should know about pest control in Houston and the pests that cause problems inside and around area homes.

I Live In Houston. What Pests Are Common In My Area?

Pests are a big problem here in Houston and there are many species that might try to get into your home this summer. Some of the most common pests homeowners in our area find indoors are ants, flies, spiders, cockroaches, and bed bugs. Here is a basic description of each of these pests and the problems they cause.

Ants are small, social insects that live in large colonies. Most species of ants invade homes to search for food and moisture. A few species in our area cause other problems. Carpenter ants damage wooden structures with the way they build their nests. Fire ants bite and sting people and animals that wander too close to their nests. Finally, pharaoh ants spread harmful diseases.

Flies are winged insects that buzz around interior spaces. Most species are just annoying, however, some pose a direct risk to human health with the way they spread bacteria and other sickness vectors.

Spiders are eight-legged arachnids. Some spiders build webs while others hunt for their food on the ground. Although most species are completely harmless, some area spiders have powerful venom that causes pain and other symptoms in humans.

Cockroaches are flat, oval-shaped insects. These bugs are dangerous and regularly spread bacteria, human pathogens, and parasitic worms indoors. They also trigger asthma attacks with their dried shed skins and fecal droppings.

Bed bugs are tiny blood-feeding insects. These pests crawl around in beds at night and bite people while they are asleep. They can cause anemia and insomnia.

What Are Likely Causes Of Pest Infestations?

Most pests invade homes by crawling through exterior gaps, holes, cracks, and other openings. If you leave unscreened doors and windows open, especially at night when lights are on indoors, pests will come inside. Some species like bed bugs and silverfish invade interior spaces by riding in on items that people carry. The only way to stop these pests is by paying more attention to the things you bring inside.

Are There Green Options For Pest Control?

There are many green pest control options. Most involve the use of essential oils and IPM (integrated pest management). IPM involves sealing entry points and addressing factors that draw pests in. We have found these options to have great success at All-Safe Pest & Termite. The only difference between green and traditional options is that green pest control requires more frequent application whereas traditional pest control lasts longer.
