Ants are in the Formicidae family of insects that live in colonies composed of thousands of members. Adults are separated into three general categories including males (drones), worker females (soldiers), or queens. Ants are characterized by three distinct body sections, have six legs, and a pair of antennae. Unfortunately, these pests sometimes infiltrate homes in Plano and can quickly get out of control.
There are over 250 different species of ants found across Texas that range from merely being a nuisance to being potentially dangerous. The most common ant species include the following:
Acrobat Ants: The name of these ants stems from their ability to raise their abdomen over their head. They are small and generally move indoors when excessive moisture exists. They are not dangerous but can generate a foul odor.
Pharaoh Ants: Also referred to as “sugar ants,” pharaoh ants are small and generally have a reddish appearance. They are capable of spreading salmonellosis, clostridium, and streptococcus; therefore, should be handled by extermination professionals.
Fire Ants: These are small ants with a red or brown appearance that generally nest below the ground, but will move indoors. They are capable of biting and stinging, which may create pain or discomfort.
Carpenter Ants: These are black and may grow to a ½ inch long or more. Similar to termites, carpenter ants are known for tunneling through water-damaged wood on the property and creating nests.
Odorous House Ants: These are small and have a dark brown or black color. Although not a significant health risk, they can produce a distinctive foul odor.
As with most pests, ants tend to invade homes seeking sources of food, water, or shelter. They often originate from outdoor nests near the home and maybe attracted to vegetation, gardens, and exterior trash areas.
Their size allows them to easily enter a home from very small openings and hide inside walls, below floors, or under furniture to reproduce rapidly.
When preventing possible ant intrusions, it is important to take some measures outside of the home. Any fallen trees, branches, or other debris should be removed from the yard and tree limbs trimmed back away from the home. Gutters and downspouts should be maintained to prevent any debris that can cause water accumulation near the property.
Any cracks that exist in the exterior foundation of the home should be filled using a durable caulk or sealant. The windows and doors should be closed tightly, have weather-stripping applied, and door sweeps installed when needed.
Food should be placed in the refrigerator or a well-sealed container. Crumbs and spills should be promptly cleaned up on floors and countertops. Dirty dishes should not be left out overnight and uneaten pet food removed. Check to ensure the kitchen garbage can lid is closing properly.
Leaking pipes or dripping sinks should be repaired. Basement and crawlspace areas should have sufficient ventilation and consider using a dehumidifier to eliminate moisture if necessary.
Homeowners are encouraged to contact a pest control professional if a problem with ants exists. Do-it-yourself sprays, bait kits, or other products are typically incapable of fully eliminating these pests and may jeopardize your safety.
