Mosquito Control in McKinney
Mosquito Control for McKinney Yards, From Wilson Creek to the Lavon Corridor
McKinney's mosquito season runs from the first warm week in April to the first real cold front in late October, and it peaks after the June rains, when every gutter, plant saucer and drainage swale in the city holds water at the same time. Our technicians treat McKinney yards on a schedule through that whole window from our Plano office, twenty-five minutes down Central Expressway, and we've done it since 1984.
Some McKinney lots carry far more pressure than others, and we'll say which is which when we quote. A yard backing onto the Wilson Creek or Rowlett Creek greenbelt, a lot in Trinity Falls near the retention ponds, or a house on the east side toward Lake Lavon will always have more mosquitoes than an interior lot in Craig Ranch. Treatment cuts the numbers on all of them. It doesn't take a creek lot to zero, and anyone who promises that is selling something.

Two Mosquitoes, Two Different Problems
The one biting your ankles on the patio at three in the afternoon is the Asian tiger mosquito: small, black with white stripes, and a container breeder. It lays eggs in anything that holds a few ounces of water for a week, and it flies maybe a hundred yards in its whole life. If you're being bitten in daylight, the water it came from is on your lot or your neighbor's, and no truck driving down the street will change that.
The one that comes out at dusk is the southern house mosquito. It breeds in stagnant, dirty water: a storm drain, a neglected pool, the low spot in an alley, the bottom of a boat cover. It's the mosquito that carries West Nile virus, and it's the reason Collin County traps and tests mosquitoes across McKinney every summer and sprays when a trap comes back positive. The county treats the street and the drainage right of way. It doesn't treat your yard.
Find the Water in Two Minutes
Before we come out, walk the yard once and look for anything that has held water for a week. This list is what our technicians check first on a McKinney lot, in the order they find it.
- Plant saucers, a birdbath, a dog bowl on the patio, the tray under the grill. Tip them.
- Gutters. If a downspout dribbles for an hour after a storm, the gutter above it is holding water and breeding.
- The French drain or the drainage swale along the side yard. In Blackland clay these hold water for days after a rain.
- The pool cover, the hot tub cover, the tarp over the boat or the trailer.
- The low spot at the back fence, and the retention pond behind the fence if you have one.
If you found three or more of those holding water, the mosquitoes are yours and a yard treatment will make a large difference. If you found none and you're still getting bitten at dusk, the source is off the property, which is exactly the situation where the treatment of resting sites does the work.
