The name “springtail” may sound like a storybook character, but this adorably named pest is anything but. A springtail is a household insect common to the Plano area, and while these pests are not harmful to humans, they are a nuisance. Thankfully, All-Safe Pest & Termite can help you to identify these bugs, prevent them from being a problem, and provide the necessary treatment plans to keep your Plano home pest-free.

What Are Springtails? What Do Springtails Look Like?

Springtails are colored dark brown, grey, black, or white. They are an insect that will be found most often in areas of high moisture and within organic debris. These pests average about 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch in length and have small antennae at the top of their heads. They do not have wings and cannot fly; instead, they jump several inches at a time. The springtail, aptly named for its strange “spring-like” legs under its center abdomen, is often the same size as a flea. However, unlike a flea, the body is not a hard substance, but soft, so they are easily crushed. Thankfully, the springtail does not bite or sting humans, and it also does not cause major damage to any property, such as clothing, furniture, or food.

Preventing Springtails From Invading Your Plano Property

Springtails are unfortunately typically found in large numbers. Where there is one, there will be many. This makes the pest especially difficult to get rid of once discovered. However, there are methods to prevent springtails from entering your property in the first place. Try some tips such as:

  • Keep any drainage far from the foundation of your home.
  • Dry indoor areas such as basements with a dehumidifier, fans, or drains.
  • Remove any wet yard debris or wood from the property.
  • Landscape outdoors to slope away from your home.
  • Do not overwater plants in or around your home.
  • Be sure all drains are clear from debris and are draining properly.
  • Reduce (or remove) the use of mulch, especially near your home’s foundation.

While typically found outdoors, these pests will hitch a ride into the home on houseplants. They will often try to seek shelter indoors when they cannot find moisture outside.
