Ants are one of many insects here in Frisco that cause trouble for homeowners. The trouble they cause, however, is not always the same. Are All Red Ants Considered Fire Ants?

Ants come in a variety of colors and sizes. The most common types of ants in Frisco are either black or brown and grow between 1/16 and ⅛” long. Some other species are pale yellow, red, or a mixture of colors.

Fire ants are one of a couple of species that have red bodies. More specifically, they have dark reddish brown bodies with even darker abdomens. These local insects grow to be ⅛ to ⅜” long and live in large underground colonies. They build these colonies in hot, dry areas outside and will only build indoors during times of inclement weather.

The Dangers Of Fire Ant Infestations: Understanding The Risks

Fire ants are not like other common types of ants that cause problems here in Frisco. Rather than annoying homeowners with their scavenging habits, these pests attack violently whenever they feel threatened. A fire ant has both a powerful jaw (mandibles) and a pointy, venom-filled stinger. If you wander too close to a nest, these pests will climb up your feet and legs, grab you with their strong mandibles, and begin to sting over and over.

Fire ant stings cause immediate warm pain followed by discomfort and itchiness. Be extra careful to avoid these pests if you have an allergy to venom. Talk with your doctor to understand your risk.

Is There Any Way To Kill Fire Ants Instantly?

There are a number of things you might do to deter red fire ants on your property, including:

  • Keeping things dry
  • Trimming your grass
  • Sealing potential entry points around your home’s exterior
  • Investing in professional ant control

Removing these pests from a property, however, is much more difficult. One thing that makes fire ants more challenging to control than most other local species is that they have multiple queens. Regardless of what control methods you use, you will not fully eliminate these pests unless you eliminate every queen. If you fail to do this, nests will split and start up new colonies in other areas around your yard. You should avoid this.
